Spain: CASI to close campaign with 225 million kilos of production

The Agricultural Cooperative San Isidro (CASI) is about to close the 2011-2012 campaign, in which, according to the president, José María Andújar, the final production is estimated to have reached 225 million kilos; a great improvement over the previous year, when the cooperative saw a 25 to 30% fall in production and turnover.

Andújar agrees with other provincial agricultural agents, who have pointed out that this year has been reasonably good regarding prices and profitability. "This campaign has been a breath of fresh air. It has not come with massive prices, but with profitability for growers, which will allow them to continue working, pay their bills, cover production costs, and what is more important, recover some hope."

CASI's final turnover of the campaign will amount to over 200 million Euro, as estimated by the president of the cooperative, because to product sales, which account for over 150 million Euro, we must add the sale of supplies and other activities.

The average price obtained this year by CASI has been 0.68 Euro per kilo, explains José María Andújar, emphasizing the stability that agriculture provides compared with other sectors which are not doing as well. "Once again we have evidence that agriculture is Almeria's economic engine," mentions Andújar in relation to the province's image, and Spain's, concerning economic matters.

CASI is also about to close the melon and watermelon campaign, with expectations to sell 2 million of the former and 8 million of the latter, with prices averaging 0.35 to 0.40 Euro per kilo. "Senegal and Brazil have sunk the melon market this year, but watermelons have done a little better," he affirms.
