Spain: increased export of fruit and vegetables in May

Spanish export of fruit and vegetables in May has seen a 10% increase compared to the same month in 2011, with a total amount of 838 million Euro and a quantity of 908.872 tons.
This positive trend was likely due to an 20% increase in value, and an 17% increase of volume. A healthy export of tomatoes compensated for a relative dip during the past months. Also remarkable is the upsurge of cabbage, paprika, lettuce and courgette shipments.
The export of fruit went up with 6% with a total of 567 million Euro and a volume of 557,842 tons. Most eminent was the export of citrus, watermelon, strawberries and melon.
Between January and May there was a rise in export of 5% in value and 4% in volume, namely up to 3.776 million Euro and 5.1 million tons. Vegetable export came to 2.3 million tons (+1%) at a value of 2.190 million Euro (+5%). Fruit export was 2.8 million Euro (+7%) valued at 1.857 Euro (+7%).
To FEPEX this development is the result of high demands in countries like France, Germany and Russia, where consumers are increasingly sensitive to healthy food.
