Jackie Boussier: “Export strawberries on hold”

Belgium: “National production cherries annual decrease”

The Boussier strawberries in Borgloon are on a break. “We namely export to Scandinavian countries such as Norway and they have their own production right now. This will take about four weeks and I expect that our export production starts in fourteen days again. The Belgians that are exporting at the moment particularly deliver to France, England and Germany. The quality of the outdoor strawberries presently is nothing to write home about because of the weather and these countries are yet in the nearer vicinity to deliver decent quality.”

According to Jackie Boussier, not too many volumes are delivered in Belgium either. “At auctions approximately 100 tons daily are supplied, of which 30% is for export.”

Boussier mostly sells cherries at the moment, designated for the industry. “They are imported from the Czech Republic and Poland. The annual production in Belgium is decreasing; an increasing amount of cherries is lifted, chiefly resulting from the fact that the Eastern bloc countries maintain a cheaper production. We cannot match that.”
