Peru: Mandarin exports rising 5% this season

According to information from the Peruvian Association of Producers and Agro-exporters Guilds (AGAP), mandarin exports this season, which began in March and will finish in August, could reach 82,000 tonnes, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous campaign.

AGAP's Executive Director, Ana MarĂa Deustua, mentioned that all mandarin shipments during the 2011 season amounted to 78,000 tonnes and generated 41 million US dollars.

"The demand for citrus is quite high. Peru exports many mandarin varieties, but mainly satsumas and clementines, which are very popular in the European and North American markets," she declared.

She specified that 33% of all exported Peruvian mandarins are shipped to the UK, 20% to Canada, another 20% to the Netherlands and 18% to the US.

Other minor markets for Peruvian mandarins are Russia and Sweden, with 3 and 2% of the exports respectively.

"We are making quite an effort for our exports to grow this season. We estimate a 5% growth, so we are hoping the weather will work in our favour," she noted.

Finally, she mentioned that the provinces of La Libertad and Ica produce the most export mandarins and that the exports of this fruit represent 50% of all Peruvian citrus exports.
