Germany fears harvest losses blueberries
Last Thursday the blueberry season was opened again in the German federal state of Brandenburg, according to the German website Proplanta.de. The small vitamin bombs grown on 81 HA in Brandenburg will still be picked till September, the ministry of Agriculture mentioned. The growers, however, will regionally have to accept harvest losses of up to 30%. This is caused by the heavy weather of the
18th of June, when hailstones of sometimes 5 cm in size damaged the fruit.
The light sandy soil in Brandenburg offers good growing conditions for blueberries. For this year the growers from the federal state expect a harvest of maximum 450 tons. Last year the harvest in Brandenburg amounted to 412 tons. In the whole of Germany the harvest amounted to 6,600 tons. In Germany the average consumption per head of the population is only 100 grams. For instance in the United States the consumption is a lot higher. There a quantity of 370 to 570 grams per person is consumed.
