Netherlands: Aubergine season could end in failure

For the Dutch aubergine growers the season threatens to be a failure. The growers have for almost the entire season been plagued with very bad pricing. "It is going very badly. I have never experienced this in my thirty years as an aubergine grower," Ted van Luijk from Wateringen tells. "Prices are just bad. There is a lot of competition from other countries, especially from Spain. That makes it difficult to obtain good prices in our trade."

Ted says, that the price of aubergines sometimes changed 15 to 20 times before they are on the shelf. "Last week I was in the south of the country on a number of occasions at the Floriade in Venlo. There we were as growers representing our beautiful product. Every now and then I also had a look at the local supermarket in that area to see how the product was there on the shelf. That will really give you a fright. The product is shown well, but to see the prices is painful."

"At the moment we have some problems with competition from the Spanish growing areas. These aubergines are of good quality at the moment. They are only a bit more vulnerable in the open cultivations," as per Ted.

The Dutch aubergines are of better quality according to him. "They really look better. Because of the weather, which is not so good, our production this year is behind. This is also something I have not experienced before. So far except for the obvious organic protection we have not had to use plant protection means. And the plants look good carrying beautiful aubergines. This is quite a consolation for me."
