For postseason

Argentina: Fruit producers to demand salary increase

The Fruit Guild will demand a 20% salary increase for postseason wages. The managers and secretaries meeting, which took place yesterday in Cipolletti, Argentina, fixed a 10% minimum. On Tuesday, the unions will meet with entrepreneurs at the Labour Relations Office in Roca for a collective bargaining.

The guild's representatives' position was approved after a debate which dealt also with a summary of the situation in the sheds of Río Negro and Neuquén, especially taking into account that the difficulties in the fruit sector are having an impact on the situation of the employees.

The meeting was chaired by the Secretary General, Rubén López, who assured that the salary discussions are for productivity and base salary. "We do not want any non-remunerative sums, because the objective is to improve the base one," he clarified.

At the end of the debate, López "reassured" the delegates by specifying that his priority was "to defend the workers. I am not obsequious with any government. If they don't give us an answer, do not worry, because we will let you know," he promised.

López clarified that "thanks to taking part in government decisions," members received advantages with house building, micro-entrepreneurships and subsidies for those who were unable to work the entire season due to the crisis.

"We will create seven union-backed bakeries and build 350 dwellings," he announced.

The first collective bargaining will take place on Tuesday, at 9:30, in Roca. In January the union accepted a 12% salary increase for the season's wages. The scale scheduled at that time expired in June. This is the second time that the union sets up a collective bargaining in two stages.
