growers prefer covered cultivation

Mexico: Area of open cultivation for tomatoes decreases

In Mexico the area of tomatoes under glass and foil increases each year by around 13 percent. A report from the USDA FAS shows that the area of tomatoes in open cultivation is decreasing. In 1990 it was 85000 hectare. In 2000 it was only 75000 hectare. It is expected that this area will only be 57000 in 2011.

More and more Mexican growers prefer protected cultivations. This is due to the many plagues and bad turnover this cultivation brings with it. This is why many growers of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, courgettes and strawberries want to grow them in greenhouses. At the moment there is around 13000 hectares of covered tomato cultivation in Mexico.
