Hans Maagendans, Banafood Services GmbH:

"Germany: "Banana market moves toward dip due to holiday and upcoming Ramadan"

The sales of bananas isn't going very well at the moment, and according to Hans Maagendans of banana riper Banafood Services GmbH from Straelen it has even hit a low point. "The holidays have started and Ramadan is approaching, which doesn't benefit the sales of bananas. We also have a lot of competition from the summer fruit."

"Until now the banana market has been reasonably good, with prices that are higher than last year, but the start of the holidays has abruptly ended this," continues Hans. The price level at the moment is between 9/11 Euro and at the moment even bananas from the lesser brands are being sold for prices under that.

According to Hans, normal volumes are being supplied at the moment. "It is said that less bananas will arrive in the coming weeks and this wouldn't be bad for the market situation." Banafood Services GmbH offers customers the option of ripening and storage and handling bananas. With 28 cells a ripening capacity of 35,000 boxes per week is reached.
