Russia: Potato prices greatly increased

The potato prices in Russia have greatly increased in June, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft on its website. Official statistics show that a price elevation of 50% can be noted. It may be normal for the prices to increase in June due to the more expensive early potatoes from importing countries, but the price increase this year was extraordinarily high.

One of the reasons for this is that the price base was very low. A large harvest in 2011 was sold for low growers prices, which, converted into 10 to 12 Euro per 100 kg, didn't even cover the production costs. On the other hand bad weather in some areas (heat and too much rain) meant that there were few new potatoes on the market until now.

But the biggest price peak has already taken place. Halfway through June the Russian consumers in the food trade paid the equivalent of 0.85 Euro per kg of potatoes. At the moment the price has decreased to 0.50 Euro per kg. Due to regional weather antics, further decrease in price could go slowly, say experts.
