Mexico: Chilli and tomato producers asked to destroy their ratoon

Chilli and tomato producers will have until tomorrow 12th July to destroy their ratoon as dictated under schemes established for greenhouses and protected agriculture. This is happening after SAGARPA granted them an extension of the deadline to give them more time to harvest.

The chief of the District for Rural Development 148 Cajeme, Álvaro Fraire Astraín, pointed out that producers will have to formally comply with this request, as it is important to respect the Crop Calendar and avoid plagues in the next cycle.

"Extensions of the deadline were authorized until 12th July, but according to experts and South Sonora's Phytosanitary Council, the deadline must be met, because there is a risk of uncontrolled plagues," he added.

He pointed out that 87 hectares of Spring chilli, 24 hectares of Summer chilli, 74 hectares of tomato and 94 hectares of tomatillo are still standing, and will have to be destroyed before the end of the week.

Fraire Astraín informed that if any farmers wish to establish themselves early for the 2012-2013 cycle, they will first need to respect health measures, with the only purpose of avoiding the presence of illnesses or plagues in the early stages, especially thrips and white fly, among others.
