Germany: Asparagus growers satisfied

Frost in February and a warm Spring: the temperature swings at the beginning of this year kept the Bavarian asparagus growers busy. Despite this they look back at the past season with satisfaction, reports the German website Gabot.de. A few months ago this was questionable. The cold in February and the fast climbing temperatures that followed, meant that the growers had to count on having to harvest everything early in the season.

But this turned out not to be necessary: a period of cold around Easter slowed down the growth of the asparagus again. When the warm period started again at the end of April, everywhere in Bavaria started harvesting asparagus. On the whole, it was a little too cool and dry for the asparagus, which meant that the record harvest of 2011 could quite be met.

Asparagus were loved again in 2012, especially when they were from this region. The consumption per capita in Germany was between 1.5 kg and 2 kg. The asparagus price for growers during the whole season was satisfactory.
