Panama: Gale destroys banana plantations

The recent high winds at Bocas del Toro, Panama demolished 60,000 banana plantations on 15 farms.

Abelino Cordero, producer on the border with Costa Rica, said that each plant can produce about 30 bunches of bananas, they are sold at an average of 13 cents each, which means that the total loss is $234,000.

Anel Caballero, provincial director of MIDA, said that until yesterday no producer had been seen at the offices of the institution to report the damage caused by the gale. However, a group of experts will travel to the site to evaluate and then send a report to Minister Oscar Osorio.
