Above average almond harvest in Spain

The almond harvest in Spain in season 2012/2013 will, according to the estimates, be around 51,322 tonnes, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI). This would be 13% more than last season and 27% more than the average in the last few years.

The first prognosis is from Spanish production and processing unions. In a few regions the frost hit the early varieties and in other regions lack of rain has influenced the fruit setting. So it isn't out of the question that the first estimate will have to be reduced.

The main production area in Spain is Andalusia with an estimated production of 12,000 tonnes. This would be 22% more than last year. After Andalusia follow Murcia (9,875 tonnes, +14%) and Aragon (9,189 tonnes, -3%). In Valencia the production will increase the most in percentage, with an increase of around 40%. It is estimated that the harvest here will be 9,338 tonnes.
