A smaller offer in Europe could favorish Spanish onion exporters
Spain: Better onion season anticipated
In Spain, the onion season in 2011 was marked by bad results due to the price fall, according to information provided by Fermín Utrilla, a representative of Agronomía Y Calidad SL.
During last year this company exported 2,000 tons of red onion to the United Kingdom, during July and August and 2,000 tons of yellow onion during the Autumn-Winter.
For the 2012 season, which starts again in July, better results are expected as market's expectation is set by a drop in onion offer all over Europe. Utrilla points out that despite a better season being expected, the main threats for this campaign are "the weak demand and its sensitivity to increases in prices." The market where Agronomía y Calidad exports is the United Kingdom, where, at the moment, a price improvement can be observed for red onions. While yellow onions, despite having low prices, are recovering.
On the other hand, "the weather has been disastrous since we started cultivating in January. It was quite cold in February and March and extremely hot in the first days of May," assured Fermín Utrilla. Despite the climate not helping the Spanish production of onion, Utrilla expects to export 1,000 tons of red onion and 4,000 tons of yellow onion during the present season, and expects better price reports.
Agronomía y Calidad SL was created in 2007, in Albacete. This company has been dedicated to exporting red onion (Red Emperor variety) and yellow onion (Late Valencana for Export, also known as Reca), specially to the United Kingdom. Thanks to different international certifications, like Global Gap, Tesco Nature's Choice and Leaf Mark, the company assures an excellent product to its international clients.
