Spain: Government expects drops in apple and pear production

This year, apple and pear production will be reduced by 7.6% (647,700 tons) and 12.5% (456,300 tons), respectively. This is according to data from the "last area and harvest advance" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, presented in May. Regarding apple, the biggest drop is expected on the cider varieties with 18% less (99,500 tons), while table grape will have a 5.4% drop (548,200 tons). Regarding stone fruits, apricot is the only variety expected to grow by comparison with 2011 - a 25.4% growth is expected (up to 111,400 tons)

A reduction is expected is expected in the peach harvest by 5.3% (up to 807,600 tons), in tart cherry by 4.1% (up to 95,900 tons) and in sweet cherry by 2.4% (up to 225,000 tons).

The Ministry also expects a rise of 5.1% in banana production (up to 367,100 tons) and 6.9% in almond production (230,900 tons).

Regarding vegetables, the estimate is of a drop of 23.3% in onion production, to a total of less 664,900 tons, along with reduction in cultivated area of 11,600 hectares. The biggest drop is expected on young onion harvest - up to 31.9% (about 152,200 tons).

The estimate also refers to drops on other cultivations, such as a 2.7% drop for lettuce (846,900 tons), 17.4% for asparagus (45,900 tons), 4.4% for spinach (62,100 tons), 5.3% for celery (64,700 tons) and a 4.8% drop for the first harvested tomato (927,100 tons).

The estimate registers an increase for watermelon (+9.9%, up to 813 tons) and green beans (+7.9%, up to 157,800 tons).

Carrots will have a steady harvest with just 1% reduction (376,000 tons), and turnips that will have a 0.2% reduction (89,900 tons).
