Italy: “Borettana” onion season starts at Freddi company
Before the European Community Law No 1096 of 25 November 1971 came into force, “Borettana” onion from lower Po Valley was traded under other names such as “comasca bionda”, flat onion from Como or Roveto and finally, since 1969 it has been called only “Borettana”.
This is a select product and its flavour is strong and sharp. Smaller “Borettana” onions are aimed for the pickle industry whereas bigger ones go for fresh consumption.
“We are able to satisfy any type of needs since we can supply retailers as well as the food industry. We prepare peeled onions in brine, grilled onions and also deep-freeze onions,” Matteo Freddi explains. He thinks it will be a great season for this product.
Freddi company is about to be certified by GlobalGap, a recognition that no other Italian company has for small onions.
The company is active on tacler (www.tacler.com).
