Germans expecting a plum harvest of 58,000 tons

German plum growers are expecting a good yield this year. The weather conditions, a warm March and a rainy May, were ideal for the fruit, reports the press agency for German fruit and vegetables.

Last year, plums were grown on 4,545 hectares in Germany. Around 58,740 tons were harvested. Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz are the federation states where the most plums are grown. This type of fruit is especially favoured in Nordrhein-Westfalen, reports the press agency. Of all the plums sold in Germany last year, 27% were from this region.

"Domestic plums are the best," writes the press bureau for German fruit and vegetables. Thanks to short transport distances, they arrive at the customer when they are ideally ripe." When stored in the refrigerator, they are good for up to seven days. It is also possible to freeze plums without any problems.
