Italy: Colleroni table grapes in demand on foreign market
“Foreign demand, in particular in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland increased by 30%, whereas the domestic demand fell by 20%. Only in the last few days there has been higher domestic demand perhaps because prices were cheaper,” Sammy Fisicaro, Colleroni sales manager, explains.
Grape prices are higher (+5%) than in 2011, especially for black grapes, they even reached peaks of 3 Euro/kg. This is due to the high quality of Sicilian grapes and the smaller supply of Chilean products.
After harvesting in greenhouses, Colleroni is going to harvest grapes undercover where the hot weather of the last days favoured the development of sugar content in grapes. “We only water plants when they need it, otherwise shade given by cover protects bunches from the sun and favours grapes ripening,” Sammy says.
In a few days Colleroni will start the harvest of seedless white grapes, particularly appreciated in foreign markets.
