Slight decrease potato area in France

The area of potatoes for storage in France is 113,240 HA in 2012 against 113,480 HA in 2011. This means a slight decrease of -0.2%. The general decrease in the most important regions Champagne-Ardennes is only partly compensated by other regions. Champagne-Ardennes has a decrease of 4.8%. Region Centre, in which the area increased by 1% is now the third region in France as far as potato production is concerned after Nord-Pas de Calais and Picaride. The five most important regions together take up 86% of the total potato area.

Furthermore the French UNPT (National Union of Potato Producers) have reminded the potato growers of the arrangement signed by CNIPT (National Interprofessionnal Committee of the Potato ) and the GIPT (Interprofessional group for the valuation of the Potato ) in 2003. With this agreement producers, traders and manufacturers, who are members of CNIPT or the GIPT and become victim of the bacteria Clavibacter michiganensis and Ralstonia solanacearum receive compensation with the assistance of the government. The producers will have to declare their area to UNPT before 30 June 2012.
