production of basil (and other) without the use of soil

Italy: La Guardiana Srl and Aeroponica Industriale Srl become partners to produce aromatic herbs

The Tuscan company La Guardiana Srl - involved in production and processing of aromatic herbs for large-scale distribution - and Aeroponica Industriale Srl, designing and creating systems for growing plants without the use of soil ("aeroponics") have signed a partnership agreement.

In Aeroponica Industriale plants, in Sardinia, about 500 kg p/d of basil will be produced for the years 2012 - 2013. While, at La Guardiana, about 50,000 square metre greenhouses will pass from hydroponics to aeroponics processing from September 2012.

Stefano Bigalli, CEO and sales manager at La Guardiana, says "We are really satisfied about this partnership. Aeroponica Industriale uses advanced agricultural techniques with fantastic profit from the quantity and the quality point of view. We have been testing systems that let us have very good results. Production of Aeroponica Industriale, followed by our expert staff, has been better than we expected. These results persuaded us to sign an agreement with Aeroponica Industriale, valid up to 31st December 2013. I thank the President of Aeroponica Industriale, Salvatore Gaetano Verdoliva, and his qualified staff for their work".

La Guardiana is specialized in aromatic herbs, aimed at the main supermarket chains. The company also produces carrots, celery, garlic, onions, parsley, mint, thyme and many other vegetables and herbs. The main product is basil, it was seeded on 18th June 2012 and it is going to be available from the first week of August.

Salvatore Gaetano Verdoliva, president of Aeroponica Industriale, comments, "This partnership is very important to us. La Guardiana will trade basil produced in our plants with the brand "oltre il biologico, l'Aeroponica". This agreement will let us build fully automated plants on multi-layer racks designed by Aeroponica Industriale. Thanks to them workers will not go to greenhouses in order to harvest. Basil will "move" towards workers! Without soil, you just need to move racks in order to take basil to the processing line".

"I thank my father who has been studying the development of advanced agricultural techniques, aimed to save water, cut out pesticides, respect the environment and safeguard those who work in greenhouses," Gaetano goes on, "In the case of La Guardiana, basil roots, after harvesting the herb, will be converted in pellets and used to warm greenhouses. Special thanks to Stefano Bigalli, who trusted our company and products ".
