Italy: Watermelon price much higher than last year

Iolanda Turrà, CEO at Giovanni Turrà & C. s.n.c. in Crotone, focuses on the current watermelon campaign.

"At the moment demand for watermelons is positive," says Iolanda. "Prices are much higher than last year at the same period. Demand is soaring and so are the prices because supply is falling. This is due to the bad weather conditions and partly to the crisis which affected the segment last year, so production slowed down."

"Last winter and rainy, cold spring affected the transplanting stage and the following development of the plant, slowing down its vegetation growth. However, it now appears better, but profits are much lower than the last few years.

"At the moment, on the market there are domestic and Greek products, but up to a few weeks ago products came from Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Spain and Greece."

As for the markets the company works with, Ioland says, "Most part of our production is aimed to habitual exporters who send our products to Czech Republic, Germany and France. We also export to Poland. Another part of our production is aimed to Sicily, Campania and Apulia. We supply the local market as well (Crotone, Calabria)".

The company production of watermelons is between 7,000 and 12,000 tons and it is certified by GlobalGAP.
