Chilean scientists work to ease export of berries

Chilean scientist next to companies, work to make a cover to preserve and raise the useful life of berries right after harvest, favoring the export of this national product to different countries.

The food engineer and doctorate in Exact Sciences by the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmaceutics from the Chile University, Lilian Abugoch, explained the relevance of introducing berries in the daily diet, since these lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, neuro-degenerative, certain forms of cancer and oxidant stress.

Anti-oxidant and vitamin C are some of the contributions from the berries consumption, like blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, ginger and myrtle.

Abugoch said that that the requirement for daily consumption is that it's fresh. These fruits can be consumed by persons of any age.

The scientist leads the project "Development and technological characterizations of strategic potentialities for exported berries: raise in the post-harvest useful life and quality".

Experts working in the project Innova-Berries assure that, thanks to the mix made with biopolymers to cover the fruits, these don't lose its original taste nor the nutritional properties, like fibers, anti-oxidants and vitamins C and E.

The making of this cover is base on bio-polymers (proteins or nucleic acids) extracted from cards rejected by the fishing industry, as these have, as characteristic to provide anti-biological barriers, as explained by Lilian Abugoch.

Studies show that with this eatable blade, berries will have a longer useful life, allowing a larger period for commerce. This way, competitiveness will raise, which is quite positive for the exporting sector.

The investigation team, made of 16 professionals, leaded by Lilian Abugoch and Cristian Tapia, the director for this initiative. It also counts on the support of Innova Chile de Corfo and associated companies like, Prinal, Comtesa, Cooperative las Nieves and Valle Maule, along with the backup of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
