Italy: hottest weather, Coldiretti warns about crops

1st of July, 2012 has been the warmest day of the year so far in Italy, and June was the second hottest month in history. Coldiretti points out that the fields were already affected by limited spring rain.

The temperatures in June 2012 were 3 °C higher than usual. Lake levels in northern Italy are average but there are reasons for concern in central and northern regions. Above all in north-east area the limited rain in the last months prevented the accumulation of water.

In this seasonal period crops are in development and need water to complete their producing cycle. The loss of water in the plants and in the field - evapo-transpiration - together with the hottest temperatures of the last days reached levels that we normally see at the end of July/begin August.
