Netherlands: German bean supply slowly increasing
The supply of beans from German production is not out of the ordinary up to now. According to information of the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI)
growers prices remain stable for the time being. At the wholesalers the prices for green beans increased slightly again during the last few days
In the middle of week 25 the average price for fresh beans was Euro 3.72/kg at the wholesalers. The average wholesale price is about 18% higher than last year. Cut beans are just about the same. These cost at the moment on average Euro 3.92/kg at wholesalers making them 28% more expensive than last year.
The reason of the hesitating start of supply is the weather conditions. Although they are very different regionally, the last few days temperatures have been low and rain dominated. For the start of the season of French beans and cut beans this was of course not very good. A number of the plants have suffered as a result of the low temperature and lost flowers. In any case the development of the harvest quantities is still behind expectations.
The fixed price level is also supported by the limited availability of the alternatives from Africa and Southern Europe. This week harvesting in other German cultivation areas will start. Whether this will cause a decrease in price is entirely dependent upon the further development of the temperatures.
