Peter Fes - Best of Four:

Netherlands: Cucumber prices under pressure

At this moment cucumber prices are fairly under pressure. Peter Fes of the Growers Society - Best of Four - explains that the demand remains low because of less sun. "We do hope to expect better weather in the short-term. People then are naturally more inclined to prepare a fresh salad with a juicy cucumber in it. We cross our fingers that this will increase the demand."

Fes explains that right now it is very likely that most businesses have quite a few cucumbers in stock. "Unfortunately, supply and demand is not in sync. Fortunately, production is not too high right now, but it is sadly still above the demand. This week some crop rotations take place in the south of the country. Expectations are also that the first produce will be harvested over there next week."

"Most cucumbers are still on route to Germany. Some batches are also from Austria and Poland, who sell their products on this market. Those cucumbers are of a slightly lesser quality than the Dutch ones, but they do thwart us a little bit," Fes states.

"The prices of cucumbers with a diameter of 35 mm are approximately 12 to 13 euro cents; the price of 40cm fluctuates between 17 to 19 euro cents; 50cm realizes about 20 euro cents. We wish to realize better prices, so that the Dutch growers can have a reasonable year," he concludes.
