US (NY): Warm weather brings early cucumber harvest

Warm growing conditions in New York have hastened the start of this year's cucumber harvest. Though it's hard to judge how this year will turn out at this stage of the season, growers see positive early signs.

“Harvest will start a little earlier than last year,” said Shannon Kyle of Torrey Farms in Elba, New York. He cited warm weather as the reason for the early start. Quality was reported as good due to favorable weather. He also noted that the crop could use a little more rain, though lack of moisture hasn't been a significant issue.

Dave Walczak, of Eden Valley Growers in Eden, New York, also noted an early start due to warm weather.

“The weather's been good,” he said. “We've had good, warm nights, and quality looks good so far.” The season is expected to last through September.
