Sucre

Colombia cultivates eggplants with Brazilian technique

In the department of Sucre, by using the technique of hybrid plants, they are attempting to produce between 65 and 70 tons of eggplant per hectare through a project implemented by the Government of Sucre, through the Ministry of Education and the University of Cordoba in Colombia.

This research project is located in Sampués, a Colombian municipality where 5,000 plants (achieved under close investigation with species from Brazil) will be planted, it is pioneer in agricultural research.

As reported by Fredy Nadjar Martinez, supervisor of the Ministry of Education and head of the research department, with the implementation of this project they aim to improve the production of eggplant as for size, bark, production, color, and resistance to cold; basic factors for export.

Another objective is the multiplication of improved seeds for distribution to sucreños farmers, this being the most important item that the project is looking for.

They are currently developing the selection stage of the seed orchards, and in 654 days they may collect the first production, according to Nadjar Martinez.

During the advancement of the crop they have scheduled field days with students of educational institutions of the Agricultural Department, producers and researchers to replicate the experience.

The department of Sucre is the first in Colombia to advance in this research that seeks to invade the international markets with this product, especially in the U.S. and Canada, where the product is popular.
