France: Lacour looks to increase export activity

With a history that stretches back to 1945 and a yearly turnover of 80 million Euro, Lacour is one of France's biggest produce companies. While they already supply most of Europe with fruit from around the Mediterranean and South America, they plan to expand their export program going forward.

Currently, Lacour sources most of their produce from the Mediterranean region. They carry a full line of produce from Spain, Italy, Morocco and Portugal, as well as some fruit from South Africa and Argentina. Their produce arrives at their Perpignan logistics hub, and then it's shipped to French markets for domestic consumption or to European countries for export. But, said Antoinette Manjauze, Lacour's future plans include doing more of the latter.

"Right now, 60 percent of our volume goes to the French market and 40 percent goes to export," she said, "but we want to change that and export more." The increase is planned in both volume of total exports as well as the territories to which product is shipped. Lacour is currently very dynamic in Italy and the UK, said Manjauze, but they'd like to extend that footprint to European countries like Germany and Belgium, as well as to countries farther away like Russian and Canada.

And while they look abroad, they will also focus on their core programs. So while more exports are on the horizon, Lacour plans to maintain their market position and history of sustainable growth.

"We are the third-largest actor in the French market for the products we carry," she said, "and we also care deeply about our sustainable development, and we'll make sure we develop that sustainable development certification for all of our market segments."
