Spain: Nice Fruit unveils new fruit freezing technology

The company Nice Fruit, from Catalonia, presented last Monday a world pioneering system that allows frozen fruits and vegetables that were harvested at their optimal maturity state to keep their nutritious properties and taste for up to three years.

The company, formed by Grupo Cutting's (dedicated to fruits and vegetables distribution), the financing group Fenoexit, Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya and professor Josep Maria Macenta, started this technology in a warehouse in Mercabarna and got an agreement with 20 Chinese businessmen to implement it in there.

The system consists of harvesting the fruit at its optimal maturity point, peeling it, cutting it and putting it through a dehydration process, avoiding particles in the structure breaking at the freezing point.

The president for Nice Fruit, Miquel Pastor, explained that this "is a pioneering system for fruit freezing, allowing consumption of the fruit as it was before being frozen."

According to Pastor, the technology allows the export of fruit "without worrying about expiration" which brings new opportunities for farmers.

Xavier Trias, mayor of Barcelona, was present at the company's presentation, said that "in difficult times it is necessary to invent like this company did."

For Trias, Barcelona must take advantage of its logistics platform - airport, port, Mercabarna, Free Zone and Fira de Barcelona, "a set that you don't see in many cities in the world and it's possibilities for the future are incredible."
