Daan Dees, Terrapoint:
"Ramadan very unfavourable for onion market"
Onion packers are in the process of ending the season of old onions in a good way. "We still work every day, but there is a lot of work. Actually we have to adjust all the time, but the alternative is to do nothing and that we also do not want" Daan Dees of Terrapoint from Breskens, the Netherlands, says. "But we only supply close-by markets, such as the United Kingdom. Good volumes of onions are still available, but they should not be on the road too long."
According to Dees there is no movement in the market. "We have this year also the bad luck that Ramadan is in an unfortunate period. It is actually too late for the old onions and too early for the large volumes of new onions. The first early onions are already being harvested, but that are not large volumes. The larger volumes for the market will be available round week 30, based on the fact that the onions will be ready for supply ten days after harvesting." Daan is optimistic about the new plant onions. "They really grow very fast and look beautiful. With the seed onions there are big differences between the various fields."
Daan had already called upon his colleagues to make sure to retain their position in the market by supplying a good quality product. "These worries I still have, but I also notice that new markets such as Latin America are being added. Therefore I am slightly more optimistic, but we will have to work together in order to export good quality onions to other areas. The question is also what happens in a country like Russia. That export has just about fallen away, but if they will order onions again next season then the result will be a totally different year."
It was a peculiar season, a season as we never had before in the existence of Terrapoint. There were a lot of problems about the demand, the prices and the quality. But we did our utmost to finish everything in the best way possible. This is good cooperation with our growers, suppliers, colleagues, buyers and service supplying companies" Daan concludes.
