UK apple market good

UK: Jazz makes a splash at Good Food Show

Last week the Jazz apple made a splash at the BBC Good Food and Gardening Show at the NEC Birmingham. The event was visited by more than 120,000 consumers over the five days and is seen as the UK’s biggest food and tasting event.

During the event 31,000 Jazz apples were sampled and sold and 3000 Jazz recipe cards were given out. Gary Harrison, Commercial Manager at Worldwide Fruits, said the event was, "a great eating experience and brand awareness for consumers."

Celebrity chefs in attendance included James Martin, The Hairy Bikers, Tom Kitchin, Atul Kochhar.

As for the UK apple market at the moment, according to Harrison it is good, "there is no over supply in any variety, New Zealand start dates have been delayed and volumes are down due to weather issues, also Chile has been affected by hail and less than favourable growing conditions.

Arrivals of Jazz from New Zealand however, will increase this year due to new planting areas, this is also the case from Chile. This year for the first time Jazz apples will arrive from South Africa, helping increase the volume of Southern Hemisphere Jazz by 10% on last year's 6,700 tonnes, to a total volume of 7,400.
