Italy: “The dramatic drop in the purchasing power also affects organic products”

The farm Concilio Antonio is situated in Eboli, Salerno, Italy and it is a group-operated holding to a Producer Organization (PO) called Agris soc. coop. agricola, a new cooperative made up of partners who use the organic production method.

About the current vegetable campaign, Antonio Concilio, owner of the above mentioned farm and vice-president of the cooperative Agris soc. coop. agricola, says: "My farm has been cultivating vegetables in greenhouses for more than a decade using the organic method and it is controlled and certified by the Ethical and Environmental Certification Institute (ICEA)."

"It also holds the following quality certifications: BRC, IFS, ISO 22000, GLOBALGAP."

"At the moment, our products, superior in quality to conventional ones, are less in demand due to the dramatic drop in the purchasing power of final consumers. The supply on the market is the same as last year, but unfortunately the demand fell significantly. Therefore, drop in sales is not due to the competition with similar foreign products."

"Our products’ prices are slightly cheaper than last year," Concilio continues.

At the moment weather conditions do not affect the production cycle because cultivations are developed in greenhouses.

"Our products are mainly aimed to markets in Northern Europe, in particular in Germany and Austria and annual volumes are about 2,000 tons," the owner concludes.
