Leon Hijweege, Biosphera:

"Large supply of peaches on the market"

The stone fruit season is in full swing and alongside conventional, there is also organic stone fruit on the market. The Spanish company Biosphera has had a sales office in the Netherlands since the end of January 2012, and specialises mainly in Spanish organic stone fruit. Leon Hijweege, responsible for sales in the Netherlands and Belgium, indicates that the season started off reasonably well. "The market was pretty empty at the time. As a result, we could achieve good prices."

Biosphera offers a complete range of organic stone fruit, like peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and apricots. "The current situation in the market is different. There is more supply, especially for peaches, and there is way too much volume on the market. This puts the market under pressure, and makes prices fluctuate."

"In general though, the products do pretty well. We are waiting for nicer weather. We do expect a rise in demand once the suns starts to shine. It will be exciting to see how it will develop over the coming weeks. Especially for us, now that we are active in the Netherlands and Belgium. At least we can say that the flavour of the products will improve as the season progresses."

Biosphera stone fruit is supplied to an array of wholesalers and supermarkets throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.
