Peru could become second world exporter of grapes

In three years time, Peru could become the second world exporter of grapes, right after Chile and above South Africa, as stated by Fernando Cillóniz, president of the consulting company Inform@cción.

"In the last years, exports of national grape grew more than 30%. If we keep the rhythm (everything points to it), in three years time we will be in second place as table grape exporters, which is quite encouraging, as no country grows like ours," he explained.

In that sense, he said that for the next 2012-2013 campaign, estimations point for a 25% rise in the national exports of this product in comparison with the 2011-2012 campaign, when they managed to export 132,000 tons, generating US$330 million.

Even so, he pointed to the fact that presently, this product is exported to the whole world. The most important markets are in the North Hemisphere (United States, China and the European nations), although they also export to Africa, Canada, Mexico, Eastern Europe, Central America, Asia, and even Australia, although a smaller amount, as they have the same production season.
