Spain: Grapefruit exports reached 50,000 tons

Spanish grapefruit exports reached 50,000 tons in the 2011/2012 campaign which has just finished, fulfilling predictions made at the beginning of the harvest. This according to data from Ailimpo.

José António García, general director for Ailimpo, pointed out that the export figures are in line with the numbers from previous years and show a consolidation of the Spanish product in the European market, in opposition to other sources such as Florida and South Africa. "The Spanish grapefruit managed to get a quite adequate quality/price position," affirmed García, "despite having competition with Turkey and Israel."

France is the main destination for Spanish products and concentrates more than 60% of the sales, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom. From the remaining production from the past harvest which reached 60,000 tons, 2,500 tons are destined to the juice industry and 7,500 to the internal market, according to the first provisional data.
