Spain: A plastic with garlic molecules conserves vegetables for longer
The investigation will develop an active and biodegradable package for food products recently cut. This package is made of a thermoplastic added with molecules of natural origin in micro capsules. Experts have shown that these additives improve the product's properties, as they widen the conservation time and the security against micro-organisms and pathogens. According to Foundation Descrubre, these packages also avoid the oxidation process that gives to fruits and vegetables a dull brown color.
The company Domca provides for the garlic additives to be incorporated in the packages. For that, experts obtain those active principles trough a organic extraction process from the garlic paste.
As explained by Cristina Núñez, projects responsible at Domca, with that raw material, they obtain molecules that fight existing micro-organisms in the packaged fruits and vegetables. "It's about additives with anti-microbial and anti-fungus properties, meaning they fight bacterias and molds that might show up in the vegetables and cause diseases like Salmonelosis".
