EU: Mr Fruitness presents plums
It's the healthiness of this delicious fruit that makes it so appealing for Mr Fruitness, the Superhero testimonial of the "Fruitness, enjoy it!" project, dedicated to promoting healthy nutritional practice and lifestyle for children in Germany, Austria, Poland, the United Kingdom and Sweden.
Plums are the perfect summer fruit, especially for children, with all their demanding sports and open air activities. They are rich in sugars like maltose, xylose and fructose, which form the basis of the energy content supplied by plums, amounting to 42 Kcal every 100 grammes. And after physical activity, plums are also great for quenching thirst and for rehydration, helping to replace lost liquids. The presence of potassium, calcium and phosphorus also means that salts lost through sweating can be replaced thanks to a delicious snack.
The other secret of the plum lies in its purplish skin. Like many fruits this colour, plums too contain high levels of antioxidants, especially condensed tannins, flavonones, naringenin, hesperidin and ferulic acid, which all contribute to preventing degenerative processes in the body. And to complete the picture of this fruit's nutritional virtues, it can also boast high beta-carotene content (a precursor of Vitamin A) and high nutritional fiber content too.
The young and the not-so-young alike can enjoy this health-fruit either as it comes naturally or incorporated in recipes. The slightly bitter notes within the plum's sweetness make it perfect for making cakes, sweets and desserts.
The "Fruitness, enjoy it!" campaign promotes healthy lifestyle and nutrition and the habit of eating fruit - especially pears, peaches, nectarines, kiwis and plums - in Germany, Austria, Poland, the United Kingdom and Sweden. The program includes various communications initiatives and promotions, implemented both outdoors and inside sector points of sale. On internet, the website www.fruitness.eu offers information, games and tips on health and fresh fruit consumption.
First launched in 2006, and financed by the EU, the Italian government and the CSO (the Italian Fresh Produce Service Center), this project has set a precedent, transcending European national frontiers and acting as a model for proposing fruit consumption in a playful and enjoyable way. Enjoyment has in fact been the key note of numerous initiatives launched in recent years, all designed to promote healthier lifestyles and more balanced nutritional habits.
