Portugal: Cherry production drops 40%

Cherry harvesting campaign in Cova da Beira started this year with some weeks delays, so there's less quantity but better quality as the fruits are bigger and more attractive.

The cherry campaign started later and there's less to harvest

"The weather affected the production again, making maturity take place later and, as a consequence, the campaign to start later too", explained Filipe Costa, administrator for Cerfundão, to the daily newspaper Correio da Manhã.
Cerfundão receives cherry from 300 associates in the region of Cova da Beira.

There's a drop in production around 40%, as the total must not go above 4,500 tons. Last season the production reached 7,500 tons.

Strong frosts and late rain damaged a big amount of cherry. The fruit harvested has "more attractive looks" for consumers which is a warranty for producers.
