Dominican Republic raises mango exports looking for international leadership

Mango production in the Dominican Republic has grown fast in the few last years, bringing along the exporting amounts, said Rafael Leger, president for the Mango Cluster, to the news agency Efe. The affirmation was made during a product fair in BanĂ, baptized as the mango capital.

The fair is dedicated to England this time. The country is the main destination for the Dominican exports of this fruit.

Between 2003 and 2004, the country was only exporting 50 containers of mango, but last year it surpassed 350 containers, representing 7000 tons of fruit.

"Year after year our exports are growing," pointed Leger, "the objective is to keep on harvesting and raise our exports."

The Dominican Republic, "will reach higher exporting levels as we are harvesting new areas and there's more international demand," he underlined.

Although, he clarified that the country can't be compared with countries like Mexico, Peru or Brazil, main mango exporters in Latin America.

"But we have an exporting window open and we have the chance to place the product in the market," Leger added.
