Mexico: Tomato at risk due to tariffs
The main tomato producing states in the country will start a fight to prevent the application of the 16.65% tariff, to come into enforcement in January 2013.
Manuel Cázares Castro, president of the Sistema Producto Tomate nacional - SPT, explained that 16 entities got together to try and negotiate. This action has been tried for the last 10 years as the US try to impose tariffs on Mexican producers, due to pressures from states like Florida.
And because of it, the Mexican Government is trying meeting after meeting as the time runs out to apply this tax that "would leave us out of competition," said Cázares Castro.
