US (FL): Potato harvest wraps up

Virtually all fresh potato growers in Florida have finished harvesting what has turned out to be a season with average volume. Though rain damaged some potatoes, crop yields were enough to shore up losses.

“For all practical purposes, our season is over,” said Mike Hevener of the South Florida Potato Growers Exchange. He added that there might be a grower or two still harvesting, but the majority of the state's harvest has finished. His assessment of the season is that it's been average.

“Harvest went well,” he said. “It wasn't terrible and it wasn't fantastic; it was an average year.” He noted that the success of a season is always tied to the weather, but growers were still able to achieve yields similar to previous years. The market for potatoes was also close to the norm, prices were moderate for reds and fair-to-moderate for whites, according to Hevener.
