"Netherlands: "Fennel prices back up after a dip last week"

Fennel grower Joop Litjens started harvesting the first cultivation of fennel on the 25th of May. The grower from Leunen, who sends his products via Fossa Eugenia for processing, wholesale and retail, speaks of a moderately good start to the season. "Unfortunately we had a dip last week where the prices were around 30 cent which is the lower mark. These were bargain prices, especially for crops so early in the season. Luckily the prices have climbed up to a level around 70 cent."

According to Joop, the Dutch fennel region has stayed pretty stable this year. "Not only do we have more production early in the season, but the volume has also stayed stable. The wet weather conditions have not caused many problems. We are going to harvest a lower plot in the next few days, I just hope it will stay dry."

Fennel sales are pretty stable. "A large portion of our Fennel stays in the Netherlands and a significant amount goes to the United Kingdom," says Joop. "Fennel has been promoted more in the last few years which is positive. Week 26 is fennel week at Floriade. I felt optimistic at the start of the season, especially from firm deals which were made, but I hope that things keep improving."
