Dutch Embassy supports sustainable production of banana in Colombia
The intention to give more participation to the sustainable products is extended to the banana and flower markets, two of the sectors that bring Colombia to the world (second world exporter).
European Union multinationals, chain warehouses and intermediary's compromise wasn't enough to directly impact in Colombia. So, a new player was needed that could serve as intermediary between buyers and producers. A kind of coordinator to dictate the rules for both parts to get some action.
That player is the Dutch Embassy in Colombia, who through its project of Sustainable Commerce took charge, basically, of sitting at the same table as producers, buyers, the Government and other cooperating organizations. The objective was to define the best formula for Colombian flowers, coffee and bananas to be sold in the international market with the "sustainable" seal.
"The Netherlands wanted to get into commerce cooperation with Colombia," said Joel Brounen, from the Business, Farming and Corporatist Social Responsibility Affairs office from the Dutch Embassy in Bogotá. "Colombia has much to gain in this market of sustainable products. The idea is that the new negotiations are done on a bigger scale. Not working on a 100 to 200 producers level, but to a 5,000 to 10,000 producers," affirmed Brounen.
