Australians open their hearts to new cos type

Last week, Rijk Zwaan Australia organised the latest edition of its annual Gatton Field Days. The 3-day event, held 2 hours west of Brisbane, was well attended by partners from commercial vegetable production areas across Australia as well as a number of international guests.

The trials showcased Rijk Zwaan’s extensive range of existing and new varieties of lettuce, brassicas, and baby spinach varieties. Industry stakeholders including growers, wholesalers and retailers were treated to individual, personalised tours by Rijk Zwaan area managers and crop specialists.

Visitors expressed an interest in many of Rijk Zwaan’s products, with the company’s newest innovation in the cos lettuce range – Open Heart cos – particularly catching visitors’ eyes. This is an open lettuce type with solid ribs and long leaves of equal width. Growers can harvest the leaves mechanically thanks to its open habit, and the product can be processed very efficiently. Thanks to their dual-purpose applications in the fresh and processing segments, the displayed varieties Auvona RZ (41-122 RZ) and 41-123 RZ attracted a lot of attention.
