Ecuador: ProEcuador is working to penetrate Brazilian banana market

ProEcuador is the agency that promotes the official Ecuadorian exports. This agency was founded in 2011 by the executive Decree of the presidency of Ecuador. "It is an organisation that is born with great strength. Born with a network of 28 business offices around the world. It's a fairly wide net," assured Manuel Echeverria, Director of Export Promotion of ProEcuador.

One of the major objectives of ProEcuador is to support the agricultural export sector and promote horticultural product exports in Ecuador. "Ecuador is recognized worldwide as a major exporter of agricultural products especially bananas. Ecuador is the leading world exporter of bananas. We dominate markets such as Europe, also we have high participation in the American market, and in the Russian market."

ProEcuador seeks to promote and generate new business opportunities for companies not only in the banana sector but as well for horticulture in general, so as to increase participation in markets such as Asia, Turkey, and certain American markets.

In the case of Latin America, Proecuador is working hard so that Ecuadorian bananas enter the Brazilian market. "Brazil is a major banana producer, however the Brazilian banana has a totally different quality from ours. Currently there is a topic of market access because we considered that the Ecuadorian banana has great potential in Brazil." Says Echeverria.

Besides supporting banana exporting companies, ProEcuador is supporting exporters of various agricultural products such as melon, mango, pineapple, pitahaya, cape gooseberry (Physalis), vegetables, among others. "The way to give support is to do it on several fronts. Sectoral support, support to producers (so that producers in the future also become exporters), and Support guilds (Supporting guilds on technical issues: traceability, certification and giving opportunities in other countries)." says Manuel.

On the other hand, ProEcuador is encouraging the export of Ecuadorian agricultural commodities through the organization of international events where buyers from other countries come to Ecuador in search of new products and suppliers. Recently the first Macrorueda organized by ProEcuador was completed. More than 350 Ecuadorian exporters had appointments with buyers from 27 countries during the 12th and 13th of June. ProEcuador confirmed that during the event more than 2,773 appointments took place and it was confirmed that it exceededed business expectations both long and medium term. It is expected to perform long-term business for more than 82 million dollars and short term by more than 29 million dollars.
