Italy: A good balance between demand and supply for all the products of the cooperative Sant’Orsola

“This period is characterized by a good balance between demand and supply for all the products of the cooperative (strawberries, soft fruits and cherries)”, says Michele Scrinzi, Director of the cooperative Sant'Orsola. “For this reason, prices are slightly higher than last year. However, at the same time, the production season started a bit later. Plus, due to the current weather conditions, in the next few months supply might overcome demand that will lead to a slight drop in prices.”

“Prices are slightly higher than 2011 because there is more balance between demand and supply of strawberries, soft fruits and cherries in a market without tensions. We cannot forget that the market of soft fruits is pretty lively and it shows a great interest in a product which is in line with consumers’ demand and their modern lifestyles. Plus, the natural presence of antioxidants makes these fruits essential to meet the needs of a healthy diet.”

At the moment, the Director says that they are facing some problems. “Winter was cold and dry (absence of snow) and at Easter there was a frost we are still assesing the damage. Due to these factors there could be less products available, so there might some difficulties in the marketing season.”

“Up to the beginning of the summer, our main competitors were those who import easily from abroad. These distributors can influence prices by reducing them and this is not possible for us.”

Finally, the Director comments: “What distinguishes our firm is our ability to supply products 12 months per year, guaranteeing high quality and a well-known brand. In summer, our main competitors are producers from Alps which are more or less organized.”
