The Netherlands: Last year cabbage market more than good; this season one big drama

The trade in white and red cabbage this season was a disaster. This according to Jos Koedooder of Handelsmij. Koedooder & Zn. from Bovenkarspel, The Netherlands. "Prices of white and red cabbage are now about 5/6 cents. There is too much cabbage abroad and there is no demand. Especially the Eastern Block did not order this season. Last year we had a more than good year, but this year all of us must forfeit some."

According to Koedooder the quality of the red and white cabbage was first class this year, but a market recovery is according to the open ground vegetable trader no longer possible. "The season has finished, stocks are simply too big and no doubt some cabbage will have to be destroyed. This may well have its repercussions for the cabbage area of the next season. All in all this is a cabbage year to forget quickly."
