US (UT): Onion harvest schedule returns to normal

With planting done and growers awaiting the harvest in September, this year's onion season in Utah is on more of a normal time-table than last year.

According to Brad Dahl, onion grower and co-owner of Utah Onions, this year's schedule is ahead of last year, but that has more to do with a late season last year. This season has progressed much more normally, thanks in large part to good weather.

“We've had hot days and a lot of wind,” he said. Ideally, growers prefer high temperatures in the high 80's, and the weather has been cooperative so far. How well those conditions hold will go a long way to determining how this year's crop will turn out.

“The season's progressing normally,” he said. “We've finished planting, everything looks good, so we just need to wait for the onions to size and see how the weather will be.”
