Rudi Coosemans:

“Chicory prices better than last year”

The chicory market is going well. “There has been talk all season about there being less supply. In general you could say that the market is doing ‘well’ and that the prices are better than last year” said Rudi Coosemans from the import/export company sharing the same name. “Consequently, this is a better season for growers and traders. Along with that, a lower production is expected this summer due to less chicory roots being dug up this year.”

Prices are at a good level. “The regular chicory is under a euro, but the packaged ones that we sell, are achieving higher prices. They are specially packaged for export which gives us a higher profit. Currently that is approximately 1,5 euro. Our most important customers are in America, Canada and Asia.”

Traders are reserved about what lies ahead in the next few weeks. “If the weather continues as it has been, I am expecting pretty good prices. Sunny weather will put more pressure on the market. It is going well at this time, due to the fact that there is not much supply. The demand coming from the different markets is good and with every year we have been seeing a slight increase in purchasing.”
